Mental health

Mental health is a crucial part of overall well-being, just as vital as physical health. It influences how we think, feel, relate to others, and handle life’s challenges. Yet, across many societies, including Rwanda, mental health remains widely misunderstood, under-discussed, and under-prioritized.

A study that was conducted in 2018 by Rwanda Biomedical Center found that 27.5% of young Rwandans face mental health problems between the age of 14 to 25 where they suffer from disorders like depression, anxiety, trauma, fear, isolation and others.

Mental health problems in the Rwandan society are still stigmatized where people facing them are still judged leaving health care providers be the only ones providing support. This stigma and judgement cause them not to seek support hence have limited awareness on the availability of different mental health services. This highlights the gap of availability of mental health services with less usage due to discrimination, judgement, stigmatization in the society which still holds people with mental health problems back.

CHB’s Work

At CHB, we embrace digital technology to meet young people on their phones and online. Through mobile-based platforms (YAhealth), AI-powered health chatbots, and interactive learning tools, we offer private, on-demand access to reliable information on emotional wellbeing and where to seek help.

These digital solutions allow young people to explore sensitive topics safely, ask anonymous questions, and learn at their own pace, especially in areas where in-person services may be limited.

Additionally, we work with adolescents to build a strong understanding of emotional wellbeing, stress management, resilience, and positive self-care. Through school health clubs, peer-led sessions, and youth-centered manuals, we help youth develop practical skills to navigate everyday stressors and life transitions.

Our materials and methods are designed to be age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and relatable, making mental health education accessible and engaging.
