UNESCO O3 Project

Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future (O3) a project with the aim to empower adolescents and youth to make informed decisions and drive positive change in their lives and communities.

The UNESCO O3 project in Rwanda partnered with CHB to train peer educators as SRHR champions to support school and community outreaches to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health, GBV, consent, and related topics. The project seeks to equip adolescents and youth with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to advocate for their rights and lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

The project focused on training 253 peer educators across four districts (NYANZA, NYAGATARE, GASABO and KICUKIRO), each educator equipped with comprehensive knowledge on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).

Project objectives

The primary objective remains to empower AYP with knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions about SRHR.

Additionally, the project aimed to train peer educators as SRHR champions, provide them with educational tools like YAhealth games, and support them in conducting school and community outreaches to raise awareness about SRHR, HIV, GBV, consent, and related topics.

After the training, peer educators are expected to utilize educational tools like YAhealth games to facilitate discussions and learning sessions in schools, communities, youth corners, and youth centers.

What are the implemented activities?

This project initiated a comprehensive training program targeting 253 peer educators across four districts. Each educator received extensive training in Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), with particular emphasis on addressing critical issues including teenage pregnancies, unwanted pregnancies, rising HIV infections among youth, relationship consent, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Development of an innovative sexuality education toolkit, featuring a board game  and question-answer cards. The toolkit- YAhealth game was designed to facilitate engaging discussions and learning among various groups including adolescent peers, teachers, students, peer educators, and to improve communication between parents, adolescents, and children.

The YAhealth game provides comprehensive sexuality knowledge that empowers adolescents and young people to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. This educational approach aims to prevent unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, sexual and gender-based violence, and various sexual risk behaviors.
